Theory Into Practice// Preparatory Task

In this task we have been asked to highlight 10 specified examples of source material from our context blog. These examples should be areas of personal interests in regards to personal development and extended research.

The following should be considered

  • Critical analysis - good questions, challenges.
  • Aesthetics - what satisfies you & why?
  • Designers - taste, inspiration, interpretation.
  • Audience - stereotyping, identity, appropriate inquiry.
  • Manifestos - passion for a subject, making decisions, taking control.
  • Chronologies - what happened when and what was its effect?

1.  When researching the context of practice task 0 5 examples of graphic design in the public domain, I came across this piece by FOAM creative. The 3D poster is a promotion for one of my favorite bands.

I have chosen this to express my ongoing interest in the manipulation of paper, after incorporating some form of print media into most of the briefs we have been set so far, I have come across some incredible designs that have been sculpted only from paper, it is a unique and interesting skill to have, as well as being  an extremely useful design tool.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to paper manipulation, so therefore something can be done to suit any situation with paper.

2. This Taken from research done for the 100 things brief, I was trying to get an idea of how gym's advertise themselves, what kind of shapes, type, colours are commonly used in the branding of gyms

I really enjoy designing logo's it is probably because I have done more of that than any other kind of design, mostly down to lack of experience but I enjoy the challenge of representing a business or establishment in one visual.

3.  Bill Gold, I have recently discovered that this man was behind hundreds of iconic movie posters, many of my favorites were designed by this man, posters in generall are fantastic but every graphic designer likes posters.

4. I was Introduced to a designer named Matthew Lyon, when we were doing the Favorite designers task for Jo.

Since this task I have researched a lot more designers and am continuing doing,  Matt's work I really like but I have found so many other designers that's work is incredible, by asking peers and doing more browsing.

5. Dr. Aldrete is, one of my favorite graphic designers, I found his work when researching for a contect of practice task

I love his illustrated style mixed with bold uses of colour, I enjoy his design but find I don't design anything like in a similar way, but I continue to take the inspiration and use it in my own way.

6.  My interest in print has grown dramatically, I have found an interest in print process, stock, digital, screen print. All types of print media, it's my favorite outcome for design, it is so much more satisfying for me to have a finished paper article you can hold as well as control print quality.

7. The Decoderring are a design company i was introduced to.

They have an interesting range of print based design, web design and branding and identity they produce some fantastic logo's as well.

8. Inforgraphics, are another new thing but I have found that they can be an invaluable tool to communicate information in a visual way, there is limitless ways of visually communicating facts and figures.

9. Business card designed by Pata Piri

This is just a random example, but I have a great passion for business card design, it can be, elegant, fun, smart, silly, exciting, interesting, bold, shy, whatever you want, it can hold so much impact for such a small object, I like the power of the business card.

10. Typography I must say is my newest interest, I am still getting to grips with the rules and regulations revolving kerning, tracking etc, but the power type has in a visual form is incredible, entire moods can be portrait-ed just by the shape of a letter. i have new found respect for all type families and continue searching for further inspiration.
