Context of practice// Preparatory task lesson 02/03/12

After doing the preparatory task for OUGD401, it was more difficult than I thought to find 10 sources from my design context blog, this was not because I  don't find it all interesting, I have just found that much of the content of my design context blog is made up of contextual research about brief topics, instead of further research into areas of interest.

However I am very much inspired by all 10 points on the previous post but maybe it is not shown as much as I would have liked on the design context blog itself.

In the lesson with Jo, we were first asked to take the 10 points we had posted on our blogs and use them to create 10 overall categories of interest, you can see mine below.

After creating the 10, we were then asked to remove 5 points that we are least interested in, leaving the remaining 5.

After working in pairs, to help discuss options for publications that could possibly be produced  for each point.

throught the lesson we were told to try and be quite specific with the points, as well as distinguishing whether the catogory we had chosen was theroy or practice based. After working this out, I found most of my points were practice based. As the publication should try and be evenly mixed between theoretical and practical information. This means i need to work out the theoretical side I will be focusing on in the publication.
After denominations I eventually arrived at this point

Paper Manipulation (on printed media)

My publication idea was produced when discussing options with peers;

It would be a great opportunity to further research into the skill of paper manipulation and try and create some form of unique folded media that would highlight the possibilities of paper folding

This lesson really helped me understand what the brief was asking of us, I didn't really realise my interesting in this area until I was forced to self evaluate my interests to date.

Again I was told I will need to find a solid theoretical topic about paper manipulation to focus the publication on.

these are a few options i have come up with.

  • History of paper making
  • History of paper folding
  • Paper manipulation in modern design
  • Theory behind folding paper for design
Out of these options I think 'Paper manipulation in modern design' will be the most interesting topic for me to cover,

However, it may be the case that I will choose areas of my context of practice essay, as it is a topic I feel strongly about, but I shall see once my ideas develop and I receive feedback from the essay.
