Design Practice 2 // Viking Warrior documentary




Beginning of the vikings
  • Viking Heritage came from - Norway 8th Cent AD, 300 years reign spread over Europe, Middle East and Americas.
  • called Pirates, Raiders, Heathens
  • Initially just fought each other
  • Huge hand-to-hand fights on water, tied boats together and fought to the death, winner takes boat to use.
  • Learned naval battle tactics by fighting each other around fjords in Norway
  • Huge sea battles / Quick raids
Importance of Long Boats
  • Key was their long boat. Man power, row in either direction.
  • Boat was built for raiding, slim, easy to handle
  • 'Viking' actually means 'sea raid' in Scandinavian language
  • 2 crews were on 1 boat at a time, sleep on deck take it in turns to row and sleep
  • vikings were like brothers because they spent so much time together.
  • Worked together in battle and in trade and building.
  • long boats had a crew of up to 50 men.
  • Master builder would build boat by memory
  • would take 12 trees average to build boat. Oak Spruce, Pine
  • symmetrically design means they could row in either direction
  • Shallow draft which meant they could navigate shallow waters, sail up rivers and land almost anywhere.
  • All vikings were well trained craftsmen.
