Beginning of the vikings
- Viking Heritage came from - Norway 8th Cent AD, 300 years reign spread over Europe, Middle East and Americas.
- called Pirates, Raiders, Heathens
- Initially just fought each other
- Huge hand-to-hand fights on water, tied boats together and fought to the death, winner takes boat to use.
- Learned naval battle tactics by fighting each other around fjords in Norway
- Huge sea battles / Quick raids
- Key was their long boat. Man power, row in either direction.
- Boat was built for raiding, slim, easy to handle
- 'Viking' actually means 'sea raid' in Scandinavian language
- 2 crews were on 1 boat at a time, sleep on deck take it in turns to row and sleep
- vikings were like brothers because they spent so much time together.
- Worked together in battle and in trade and building.
- long boats had a crew of up to 50 men.
- Master builder would build boat by memory
- would take 12 trees average to build boat. Oak Spruce, Pine
- symmetrically design means they could row in either direction
- Shallow draft which meant they could navigate shallow waters, sail up rivers and land almost anywhere.
- All vikings were well trained craftsmen.
